I never had a dog
and the fish that I had (key word) were African Cichlids
to make a long story short my wife "borrowed" the extension cord from their water heater to blow dry the window film (the kind you use to keep cold air out during the winter) Well she never put it back. My fish were in the basement and when I went down to check on them they had froze to death. then she had the nerve to re-do to bathroom decor with a fish theme. If a therapist ever asks me "any traumatic experiences in you life?" that will be at/near the top of the list

I wouldn't have thought so, as dogs need much more personal attention and can give a lot of love back for it. Goldfish, on the other hand, don't give any feedback.

I don't know about love. I have a betta fish that I have had for 3 years, and I have to admit I would be sad if he died.

If I were you, I'd love them both equal. I love every animal equal.
