I would say it is because of cultural values being placed on different things. In the US biology is considered very important and worth killing an animal to do a lab.

Would you want someone to go operate on you if they have never seen blood up close? This is why I sometimes require my anatomy students to dissect a fresh rabbit. (Keep in mind most anatomy students plan to go into medicine). This lets them know whether they want to continue on that tract or find a different one. About half of the students who start on planning on being a doctor or nurse change their minds. Perhaps some will change back, perhaps nots, but at least they know what they are getting into!

BTW The rabbits we use are meat rabbits and are utilized as meat when we are finished so they do not go to waste..

Isn't because most Hindus are forbidden to harm living things or is that just Buddhism?
