It is a very very bad idea to cut an ingrown toenail. It will just grown back ingrown again and possibly get infected. You can try soaking it in epsom salt and gently push back the skin. If that doesn't work then you should see the doctor.
Always cut your toenails straight across and slightly above the bed. this will prevent futre ingrowns.

If there is no serious infection, soak your foot / feet in warm salt water for about ten minutes.
Dampen some cotton wool and pull it apart until it is very thin.
Place it over the end of the nail and, with a fairly thin instrument, (like a toothpick) gently ease the damp wool under the nail
As you ease it underneath, push it gently towards the end of the nail that is ingrowing.
Do this until it starts to become tender - then stop.
Repeat this in the morning and in the evening. As time goes by, more will be able to be inserted underneath the nail and you will lift the ingrowing nail out from the edge of the toe where it is ingrowing.
If it is very infected, you would be advised to visit a chiropodist and not attempt any self cure. The chiropodist will also instruct you in the correct manner in which to cut your nails in the future.
Do not wear shoes that are tight around the toes.
Hope this helps

The only way I know of to actually get rid of an ingrown nail is to let it grow out enough that it can grow straight. I've tried this and it's too painful to walk, so I cut mine with cuticle clippers. Make sure you soak it first at least in warm water to soften the skin, and that the clippers are clean. Infections are worse than ingrown nails!
If it's a chronic problem for you, or on several nails, a podiatrist could be a good option.

Do you always have ingrown toenails? I do. I have a great pedicurist at a local nail shop that gets it out really well. When I do it, I always cut myself. It might be worth $10 to you to let someone else do it for you, you don't need a full spa or special pedicure.. Just be sure to tell them which toes have the ingrown nails so they can concentrate on digging out the nail from those toes.

I get that all the time. I cut it out. If you cut a V in the center of the nail, the nail will grow back together pulling the ingrown away from the side. Not a large V just enough to separate the nail. I tried it once and it worked. Now I just let my salon do it for me if it gets too bad.

From personal experience, once it gets so far along there is nothing you can do yourself to help it, the infection will get worse too.
I went to see a podiatrist (foot dr) and they deadend it and cut it out, it was so gross! But I had no more pain after that and he shot something at the root of the toenail on that side to kill it so the corner will not grow back.

Hello! I am experiencing it now. It hurts like hell I know.
If it has pus, it means your toe is having an infection. You should start putting on medicine.
For me because I am Asian, I have access to chinese medicine.
Once such thing happens, immediately get a chinese herbal oil from any chinese medicine shop. I bought 'Double Prawn Herbal Oil', which is good for these types of infection. It hurts, which is a good thing as the oil is killing the germs.
If yours have infected badly such that there's a piece of meat growing out of the area where your toenail grows in, continue putting the herbal oil. Purchase 'Saw Hong Choon Skin Ointment'. It is a white balm that helps very well in these types of situation. Note: you will notice your skin turning hard and white which is normal. This is caused by the medicine.
Continue for a few days and the piece of meat will turn white and drop off by itself, and your toe is cured! :D
If you go to most pharmacist, they'll tell you to opt for surgery. I think that it is a waste of money, and the pain you will go through is a thousand times worse than the traditional method.
Oh! One thing to note: for antiseptic purposes, use Betodine!
ALSO AN IMPORTANT NOTE:
1. Wear slippers/ sandals as it will not add pressure onto your toenail like shoes do! (Shoes cause the toenail to grow into your meat deeper.)
2. NEVER EVER LET YOUR TOE TOUCH WATER. (if you have meat growing out)
Sorry for the broken English, but yes. I hope people who read this recover soon! :-)

Dont cut it. I get them all the time and cutting it will make it grow back again. Soak the foot in a foot bath of water and epsome salts. Then try peeling back the skin around the spot. Take a otc pain reliever as well. Hope this works for you.

Soak your feet every night in warm salt water. I have had a cronic problem all my teenage to adult years. It really works. Once it got so bad though I had to get a partial toenail cut to dig it out.

Theres a special cuter you can buy from wal mart, target etc etc. Look for the revlon brand. Soak your toe in warm salt water before hand to soften up skin before you rip that sucker out.
