Hello,
I will be staying in Vegas for the 4th of July for two nights with a ladyfriend, and was wondering which hotel is better, the Luxor, or Tropicana? We are both in our 20's. I have heard the Luxor defined as "Ghetto" but I could think of worse places. I would never stay at NY, NY, Paris, Excalibur, MGM. Thanks

The reason I indicated that I would not stay a certain hotels is based on the fact that they draw a huge population of families, and kids, that sorta thing aint my bag!!

If you are looking for "Ghetto", then stay at the Tropicana. If you want a unique and entertaining experience, then stay at the Luxor. For a truly unique experience, request a room within the pyramid near the top (floor 20+). The view below is awesome (just don't look down if you've had a few - LOL) .
The Luxor is consistently rated as a 4+ star hotel and casino. The Tropicana is typically rated a 3 star or less hotel. The Luxor also offers more high-quality amenities such as a great pool area, health spa, several restaurants (from fast food to fine dining), brilliant entertainment venues, an awesome nightclub, ultra lounges, 3-D IMAX Theater, mini King Tut museum, two-story game room, shops and a free monorail that conveniently transports you to the rest of the Las Vegas Strip.
You cannot go wrong staying at the Luxor as opposed to the Tropicana. Check out the sources below for more information. Trust me, you will not be disappointed with the Luxor. It is one of the most unique places I have ever stayed.

The Luxor is a very nice hotel. I don't know who would ever call it ghetto! The Luxor is a lot nicer hotel then the Tropicana. I never see a lot of families at the NY NY, Paris or the MGM. The Excalibur has a lot of kids running around.

The Luxor is a lot nicer and newer than the Tropicana. I wouldn't ever think of the Luxor as ghetto. The Tropicana on the other hand, is sort of ghetto (in my eyes at least). I would definitely choose the Luxor. They've got lots of neat things to do inside the hotel (a replica of King Tut's tomb, an IMAX theater, a big arcade, etc.).

The Luxor is better than the Tropicana...Not sure who said the Luxor was ghetto. They or someone they know must have had a bad experience and are trying to dog the hotel. It's much better than the Tropicana. You can also try the Mandalay Bay. It's located near the Luxor and connected by that "rail" that they have. If you can afford it..The Wynn is the deal!

Pretty much any hotel off the strip on the 4 th of july will be good to go to. A lot of people makes reservations at the stratosphere because they can watch the fireworks from the top of the tower.
But if your choices are tropicana or the luxor, I say go to the luxor, the luxor and the mandalay bay are the last 2 casinos on the south side of the strip, you can work your way to the other end to the stratoshpere, and see the sights.

Took my now ex-girlfriend to the luxor for her 21st B-day a couple years back and was upgraded to a jacuzzi suite which was awesome. Hot tub right under the window/ceiling so you can soak and stargaze very romantic. I only paid 60 bucks per night and the room usually goes for about 350 I think so I am a big fan of the Luxor. I doubt you would be able to get the upgrade on the 4th of July though as it is probably too busy but it never hurts to ask. wouldn't recommend the Tropicana. How often do you get to stay in a pyramid??

My hubby & I went for the first time in March-we stayed at the Luxor & I did not think it was ghetto! (we are 25 I mean, of course it was no Bellagio-but who can afford that?! lol Does the hotel really make that much of a difference? The only time we were in there was to shower and maybe get a little sleep. We were walking the strip, going to clubs, going to eat , shopping, gambling, etc.etc. The Luxor had a great view & it's really cool inside b/c it's a pyramid so everythiung is kind of slanted & the elevators are called inclinators b/c they go up at a slant. We did not go to the Tropicana so soory I do not have any info on that. We even won $1,000 on slots, at the Luxor! How crazy is that?! that is more than we won on craps! They had a great buffet-& I am not a buffet kind of girl. I love Criss Angel & his headquarters are at Luxor. It's right in middle so you can walk anywhere.

Luxor has seen better days but it is certainly not even close to "ghetto." And it is definitely a nicer place than the Trop. The Trop isnt a terrible place plus it does have one of the best pools in Vegas and its closer to the action than the Luxor. So I guess it depends on what you are looking for... If you want the better room, go Luxor. Better pool and location, go Tropicana.

The Luxor is not ghetto. It is actually opening a lot of new clubs and bars in the casino and the employees are all nice.
The Luxor is moving away from being family oriented. Mandalay Bay is a great hotel.
The MGM Grand is nice too and isn't family oriented. Excalibur is horrible and I don't know enough about NYNY.

Luxor beats Trop hands down. But if you would NEVER stay at MGM Grand or Paris, then you won't be happy at Luxor or Trop either.
Spend the extra money for Bellagio, Wynn, or Mandalay Bay.
****EDIT*****
In regards to your additional details about avoiding the "family" spots....
Luxor attracts families also (arcade, Imax theatrer, virtual reality rides, etc), so in that regard Tropicana might be your preference between those two.
But you might be happier at one of the older properties owned by Harrah's instead. They are all a step up in quality from the Trop and they are all more adult-oriented, not offering all of those arcades and roller coasters and aquariums and other Disney-ish stuff that the MGM Mirage properties are so famous for. They are also located more near center-strip, as opposed to the Trop which is on the South end, surrounded by kid-friendly hotels.
Here are a few that fit that description, along with the official hotel websites for more info:
Harrah's

Ballys:

Flamingo:

And here's the official link for the Trop in case you don't already have it:

And here's a map of the Strip for you too:
(Stardust was recently imploded and Aladdin is now Planet Hollywood... but other than that, this is up to date.)
