Because getting drunk will make you happy, make you want to dance and be social. Then once it starts to wear down thats when all your problems hit you 5 times harder. My mother is an alcoholic and I wondered the same thing. It took until I was an adult to notice that they do it for the few hours of pleasure before they I guess you could say hit rock bottom.

Alcohol does not depress u.. it gives u a false sense of relaxation and takes u from reality if only 4 a little while. I don't have a sip of wine or beer 2 get drunk, I have it 2 calm and sooth my nerves! It sort of numb u 4 awhile..

A depressant doesn't make you depressed. It "depresses" or slows down the thinking processes. The effect of alcohol is to create a euphoria, or a high.

I have wondered this myself. If I'm angry about something small (like someone was rude to me, or I forgot to pay a bill on time), then a beer or two will help me forget it. Next thing you know, I'm jammin some tunes and having a good time.

But if I'm upset about something big (like my old lady leaving), then no amount of alcohol will help that.

Some people just can't deal with reality, and drinking takes them away from reality. The problem is limitations. There is a difference between a healthy, non-dangerous buzz, and a falling-down drunk-driving wreck.

Don't you dare insult my Lady Love!! Well, my Mom just died and alcohol did help. I was too drunk to kill myself. Now I am fine. Don't knock it until the time comes when you turn to it. It's easy to criticize, what you don't understand.
