The way I collect a paycheck!

There are auditors (who verify a company's figures and issue financial statements / reports) and tax preparers, who use those numbers to compute federal, state, and local liabilities.

That's simplifying it a LOT, so if you have the chance to take an intro course, or just read a simple book, that's my advice!
