I am wondering if display can be fixed with minimal hassle. Do I have to go to the dealer?

it most likely a fuse That would be the first place to start if its not that then make sure the interior lighting nob is all the way up and if its none of them then it may be shot?????

either a fuse...or the panel just wore out. you could spend money to fix it (shouldnt be more than $100, but ask the dealership for an estimated price). the only real thing the odometer is good for is so you know when to change your oil and if you ever wanna sell the car.

i have a 99 truck with the same problem it is in the colum if i move the tilt colum it sometimes comes on but no real problem

Sounds like a blown fuse.

bad resistor in panell you can getone at a junkyard but first check to see if there is a fuse just for it
