Jerry is correct, but that is the long way to do it!

Connect the cables like Jerry said, but instead of hitting play and record at the same time, there should be a place on the Tivo menu that says "Record to VCR". Try that and see what happens.

I think you are trying to make this more complex than it is.

Video and audio out of the DVR to Video and audio in of the VCR. Use RCA cables red and white or black for audio, yellow for video. Hook up a monitor to the video output of the VCR or a TV set to the RF output so you can see the picture.

Set the VCR to record from the video input.

Hit the record button on the VCR and hit the play button on the DVR.
