Nominally, the second Tuesday in November of every leap year. Really, all the time between now and that time is "election time." Because long before we vote for a president and vice-president, we vote in the primaries, to decide the candidates for each party. After that, it's not about what person (or people, if you consider that the vice-president really is important as a backup) you think would be a good president, but about what party you feel you should support.

Unfortunately, most Americans are under the impression that there are only two parties that matter, that no "third party" can possibly win, and therefore they tend to end up voting for the candidate that they dislike the least, rather than having the opportunity to vote for someone they actually think would be a good president.

They forget that both of the two main parties was once a "third party" that captured the imagination of the public with an especially good candidate, and turned into a major party as a result. Abraham Lincoln was a "minor party" candidate for the Republicans.
