yeah great listen to them experts get a koi, I bet they know allot about them to tell you that for koi you need a pretty big pond or the fact that it must be at least 3 ft deep or the fact that with koi you need a lot of filtration oxygen and that their loads of variates. They can eat allot of food and can grow to nearly a metre long which is about 3 foot.
yes Koi are nice but you must find out more about them don't just by on impulse as allot of those suggesting would do, koi can live up to 80 odd yeas in the right environment and their are so Meany breeds and not to mention the cost of keeping a single koi fish food treatments should you need them running pumps, filters, air pumps, water heater over winter,
not to mention that if you pay a high price for your koi insurance like I said before koi ain't cheep not that you would buy a madori goi ( which is a type of Koi) for example this fish in a good condition at about 8 inch's would cost you the best part of £11,000 and no that's not a spelling error.
yes their are cheaper breeds that are nice I have a Stunning Sanke, an Asagi and I use to have a shirro bekko before a frog crushed its gills in mating season.
by all means get a koi if you pond has all of the above and if not then go and ask a garden centre but please don't put koi in a pre-formed pond they just are not big enough.

Blue Koi, Red Koi are beautiful. Tri and quad color comets and shubs are also a beautiful choice. however don't be suprised if the prices of these well colored fish are high. The nicer and brighter the color, the more you will pay.
Misqueto fish, Sarasa Comets, Bitterlings are also good choices.
Gray and white ghost Koi are beautiful and can be seen well against a dark background. Platinum and Yamabuki ogon Koi are also beautiful fish.
Albino or golden cats would also add some color. Or a good mix and black and white fancy's.

here is a good site to give you a few ideas. Good luck with your pond.

Koi are a very colourful type of pondfish which can live to about 12 years! You can get them at most fish stockists and garden centres!

we have a largeish outdoor pond and apart from Koi we also have comets (all gold) and chibunkins ( black white and gold mixed) most types of cold freshwater fish that you would normally keep in a tank will survive in a well looked after pond.

Comets, koi and shubunkins are all colourful and very hardy. Please ignore most of the suggestions on coolcat's list as thay are tropical breeds and will quickly die in your pond.
Try a local Wyvale, they often sell pondfish.
