Seriously, though (and, by the way, some of the other answers were pretty funny; I'd give 'em a thumbs up for wit), it may be that they are deficient of some minerals, and are eating the dimes to get those minerals (I would also consider Joyful Noise's suggestion as a possibility, albeit a remote one as it is organic matter that rodents usually gnaw on to wear down their teeth).
