Filezilla is good, and you'll also find the old traditional ws_ftp, and there's a Firefox add-on called FireFTP, and others.

The *way* to do it is, you get the name of your FTP server from the hosting company when you sign up with a hosting company (the place where your website files are stored). They also give you, the userid, password, and other setup information, if necessary, like a "folder" into which files are stored. You'll use these with your FTP program to setup an account, then you'll "connect" to the FTP server. You can then Send files to the FTP server from a chosen folder on your computer, or receive files or rename or delete files there, or list the files in the directory there.

That's about it...

You can download an application - Leech is a good free one: http://www.download.com/3000-2356-10122208.html

If you're not at all familiar, IE will work too. Just go to ftp.sitehere.com and you'll be prompted to login. Then it's open just as another folder on your computer and you can drag and drop.
