On the older pickups Z 71 was always a four by four...however the brains at Chevrolet/GMC decided that for the 2007 model year, in the newest generation trucks could be had with a Z 71 package and be just a two by four. So there are Z 71's that are two wheel drives in the latest generation. The Z 71 four by fours have an extra bit on the sticker that says "4X4" to tell them apart.

Not necessarily. The Z-71 package is available without 4x4.
I have a GMC Canyon that has the Z-71 suspension package but the truck is a 2 wheel drive model with a locking differential

I have a 2011 Chevrolet 1500 - Z71 that is not a 4 wheel drive.

Ive never seen one that isn't. It's part of the Z71 package.
