first remember that the brain is like any other part of the body, the more you exercise it the better it works.. so read, do puzzles and brain teasers.. that sort of thing.

Next, remember that the brain, like the body, is a machine.. what fuel you put in has an effect on how it performs.. eat healthy and drink lots of water.. also ginkgo biloba is said to help increase blood flow to the brain, aiding in memory.

EDIT: I wanted to come back and add in Physical exercise. If you are in good shape, you will have less stress and the brain will have less to deal with, and deal with thing faster.. it will help your mental functioning.

Most people it seems walk down the street in doldrums. Instead look around and seek connectiveness. Why are there cracks in the side walk? How did the sidewalk get there? What might it have looked like before there was a sidewalk? Etc. Take it all in, the birds flying around, traffic passing by, the cool breeze or hot sun. Feel these things and experience these things. Your mind already is and all you have to do is notice what's really there in detail and make the connections. Become more aware.
