If you are over the age of 9, there's no excuse for not figuring out the difference between "You're, you are, your, there, they're, and their"

I think that the previous post from Lori T makes your point nicely. Her answer is so poorly written that it doesn't make sense. Spelling and grammar are important in allowing you to convey your thoughts.

Spelling? I think what your referring to is grammar. But it seems to me more people on-line are more concerned about getting the point across rather than the technicalities of how it is done. There is a whole other language just for IM and Texting that has run over into other areas. It's just a change of times. But I have noticed that if someone asks a question and they haven't spelled it correctly they get bashed pretty hard.

They way I see it, if someone is that concerned about it there are some things that people can do.

1. Spell check, it doesn't take that long.

2. Grammar Girl can help you learn too.

Just like first impressions are important when initially meeting someone, people often make judgments about others who post on the internet based on the poster's command of the English language, including spelling, syntax and punctuation.

I agree with you completely. Vernacular is indeed novel, but it does not excuse ignorance and laziness. Seriously, if people are going to follow e.e. cummings conventions they should go all the way and write something profound.

Then again, I have noticed that grammar has become less and less emphasized in the American academic curriculum.

Yes, I suppose it's important. But I think it depends on where you are posting. If it's a serious conversation (like politics) you be using proper grammar and spelling. If it's with friends, I really don't see the need to have to be so formal.
