I have been up to see the Congress and they do not seem to be able to do anything except to eat peanuts and chew tobacco, while my army is starving.
I could not resist this. How many other commanders would say this today?

I found this quote appealing because of the current struggle over the funding of Iraq. I did not intend that we should live by this. It applies, I would imagine, to some and not to others.

Well Robert E Lee was the typical romantic general. This means that he fought on front line in not so good conditions along with his army. This is in starch contast to the top people of the politcal pyramid. However not all commanders today would be able to say the same. The only commanders that I can think of that have validity to this statement are those on the field in combat squadrons.

General Lee had the courage to say that because at the time, the South was at War with the North.. Lee was a Confederate General.
This would be like Osama complaining about how well fed Teddy Kennedy is while his terrorists are starving in their caves.
Before one throws out a quote, one should check the context in which it was said.
This particular quote was made in March 1865 by General Lee to his son, George Washington Curtis Lee. It was first reported in South Atlantic Quarterly (Durham, North Carolina, July 1927).
The Civil War did not end until April 9, 1865 so how was it a Confederate General got to Washington DC and not immediately taken prisoner?
And if it was during the Civil War, who cares his army of rebellion was starving? That was a good thing to have happening.
(Lee was a traitor to his oath, he should have been shot!)

There have been many during the Iraq war who have questioned the wisdom and dedication of WDC politicians.
Check out Gen. Shinseki: http://www.commondreams.org/views04/1226-28.htm
and Gen. John Batiste: http://thinkprogress.org/2006/08/25/batiste-rumsfeld/
These are just two of several high ranking, experienced, soldier-concerned military leaders who have been squashed by the ideologically-driven lunacy of the Bush war policy.

Actaully, I think he was speaking about the Confederate Congress (note he said while my army is starving. He only commanded a regiment while in the U.S. Army). My Congress is SO MUCH better than that. All they can do is figure ways to get more of my money.

I would wager to say that every general in every army in the world thinks this at one time or another.
I can just imaging that the commander in Iraq and Afghanistan is saying something similiar right now.

certainly, Obama has a extra valuable loopy-individual-logic (confident, i'm refering to you) connection to Lee. on an identical time as perhaps no longer a racist himself, Obama is supported through those with a racist time table - Senator Robert C. Byrd. look him up on wikipedia, you may not be spoon fed each and every thing you comprehend through the internet...

today's Generals are afraid of being fired for speaking out. the military of today has become politicized, which is unfortunate.
