Here are some official sites of hotels that fit your "middle of the road" description, so you can compare rates/amenities, etc. Actual rates will vary quite a bit depending on which weekend you're talking about.
Check out Luxor and TI:

For a step up in quality (and cost) try MGM Grand or Mirage:

http://www.mirage.com/
(Mirage in particular is known for its lovely pool area.)
I've not heard many complaints about Rio... and it's nice that it's "all-suite"... but of course it's not on the Strip. Anyhow, here's their official site also.

Have fun and play safe!

If you book in advance, getting the Mirage for $175 a night should be possible.
Sign up for e-mail specials on thier website.
I'm not a pool person, but supposedly the Mirage has one of the nicer pool areas.
IMO, the Rio is a not appealing at all. Mardi Gras doesn't appeal to me to begin with, but if you like Mardi Gras, then the Rio might be for you. The music they play during the Carnival in the Sky show is deafening. I don't see how anybody can stand it. And the Rio is not on the strip, either.
The people staying at the Mirage are generally a little older and quieter, which is one of the things my wife and I like. (We're not typical Vegas types, but we do love it there).
Anyway, the Mirage is what I think to be the best "next-to-top-level" property in Vegas. Bellagio, Wynn, Venetian being best. Mandalay next (way overpriced for what it is, though). Then Mirage, MGM, Caesar's, Paris, Monte Carlo, NYNY, etc. Mirage is actually my first choice when I go to Vegas, I've been twice this year.
It's a very nice property for a good price. If it's over $200/night when you inquire, I suppose you could look elsewhere, though.

I would consider the Flamingo or Bally's. Both are pretty nice, in an excellent location and are affordably priced.
Rio is not a bad hotel but sometimes tends to be expensive and it is not on the strip. They do have a shuttle to the strip and a great pool so you it may work for you if you dont mind taking the shuttle.

If you're in the $175 range and want a nice place on the weekend, you'll probably have to hunt pretty hard. If you can make it on any other nights except Friday and Saturday, you can cut your hotel bill by half or more (in most cases) and $175 a night will buy you a lot.

Try Harrahs. Its a very nice place to stay and its in the middle of the strip. The Rio is nice, but, its off the strip. That wouldnt be real handy if you intend to spend a lot of time on the strip.

unfortunately the rio isn't on the strip its on the west side of I-15 off of tropican <---street.
You can try the treasure island, mirage, ceasars palace, harrahs, holiday inn (next to monte carlo casino)
those so far I can think of. I live in Las Vegas and I cant remember all the casinos in the middle of the strip lol

I was pleased with both The Luxor and Treasure Island. If you go to their web sites you may be able to find special deals. Luxor has a nice pool but I didn't try the pool at TI. But TI is more centrally located.

The Mirage is really nice and not that expensive, they have a beautiful pool and Caesars palace is right next door with the Forum shops.
