I have an 81 yamaha xs 850. I just changed the clutch cable because it was too hard to pull the clutch. It improved a little but compared to my friends' bikes it's still too hard. Do you know if I can use any kind of lubricant on/in any part of the bike?

A new cable when first installed, shouldn't need lubrication.
The clutch lifter (the cable attaches to it at the engine) splines may be worn out.
Disassemble it and check - use a lot of grease on the splines.
The lever (on the handle bars) may not move freely. Remove the cable and check for ease of movement. Remove the pivot bolt and check it and the lever bushing.

It almost sounds like it isn't adjusted correctly and it's already engaged. Does the bike run like it is now, does it run normal, are the starts smooth and the shifting crisp?

Your clutch lever should have a few mm's of play totally disengaged. Assuming the clutch lever is adjusted properly and the cable is new, I would look to the clutch and the engagement lever on the engine. Look to see if it's binding or the cable is. Check the cable and make sure nothing is pinching it, around the steering neck area. More info plz.
