Since I work at a Dodge dealership, I have noticed MOST of the time the blower motor resistor stops working. You should also check the wiring to the blower motor and resistor due to the short/open. Sometimes the wiring/motor may have been damaged due to the resistor malfunction. The resistor is fairly inexpensive.

Most radios use two power lines. One is supplied current all the time to maintain the clock and the radio station presets. The other is supplied current only when the key is on/or in acc position (or on some GM vehicles when the key is turned off till the door is opened.) Check your fuses. You may have one blown.

Unfortunately the reality is that parts wear out. It is most likely that dirt or oil got into the motor and gunked it up. It is not too difficult to replace. Detension the belt and I think it is about 4 bolts.
Good luck!

rickeys right probably just the resistor burned out it's a very common problem on chrysler products but i have seen a couple of jeeps that the blower motor had too much resistance and kept causing the resistor to burn out

There is a short in the circuit somewhere (which caused the smoke) and the fuse blew. Don't replace the fuse until you have the short circuit fixed.
