Desktops are usually more durable because you don't drop, bang, carry, shake, rattle and roll them like you do a laptop.

Also, because the case of a laptop is so much smaller, they rarely are able to be as powerful as a desktop.

But if you need to be able to take it with you, move it around the house, etc., then you need the laptop.

Desktops
You can pick and choose components and install
You can open up and fix easily
not so with laptops
hard to open and fix - each one is diffirent and a work of art
laptops are restricted for size and weight
A lot of the components ( such as hard drives are slower for reasons of durability - i.e in case they get dropped.
More expensive business laptops imagine if your company paid a fortune and the thing stopped working with imporant data in it)
That being said higher end laptops ( especially older ones) were made of high quality components and run much faster than stated claims of mass marketed computers where you may have a couple branded components ( cpus etc that are o sale) the rest may be poor standards and limit computer speed.
Especially the newer budget laptops lol - made for idiot women to plug in and leave. The main reason for purchase seems to be "they are cute" are ones that are not durable
Go the websites and look for parts - they are not available
n.a. is the term
Go to ebay and look at these laptops that are for sale
A high percentage are parts machines , or computers that will not boot. Not worth fixing.
Lastly consider the cost of batteries ( last 200 charges or a year)
And the problems of heat - which is the biggest problem with newer laptops.
If you do not need the portability get a desktop

- can be fixed easily
- can use ordinary components ( dvd etc ,) that are on sale not propietary components
etc etc etc

assuming both have same configuration, they would be equal, and the laptop would offer slightly more functionality due to portability.
However the question is durability and long term use, so the desk top, will offer more durability (since it can not be moved easily and dropped, shaken, crushed, etc...) Also as new peripherals etc come out the desk top will be easier to upgrade, wifi N is coming out probably next year, and it promises faster connections, there will come a day that there will probably be RW blueray or HD DVD for the computer, memory is getting cheap so there will be applications that will require more and more.
so if you want a long lasting one, probably desk top so you can upgrade to keep up. Remember techology doubles about every 18 months, so in two years your system will be obsolete (not really but compared to cutting edge tech) so upgrade path is nice to have.

Desktops are better by far. First they are stationary. They don't take the abuse laptops do. Second, they are upgradeable, with a laptop it's pretty much what you see is what you get. Third, desktops are MUCH easier to repair. If a part goes bad in a desktop it takes almost no time to replace the part and your back up and running. For a laptop your VERY limited on parts you can replace if it goes bad. My advice is go for the desktop.

Hi. The laptop will usually run the CPU at a slower than rated speed for heat purposes. The desktop would be easier to upgrade. I would go with the desktop.

It would depend on your preference. I have a laptop @ home & a desktop pc @ work. Both in use for 4 years now. I love the moveablility of the laptop @ home plus it's wirerless. the pc @ work is faster booting up but both r equal in speed when using them.

i say desktops since all parts are upgradeable and can be replaced when damaged, not like laptops wherein most of the stuff are integrated (video card + motherboard)
