I had decided for over 10 years not to have another because the labor and delivery was really hard and scary. Then I "accidently" got pregnant. I switched from the pill to the patch and it didn't work. now i have a 2 year old son and we can't imagine life without him. and by the way, the labor with my son was even harder than with my daughter.

I am struggling with the same problem. I have one daughter, she's 6 months old. I hated being pregnant (gained over 80 lbs) and I hated the labor, the pushing, and then finally the emergency C section. I really, really do not want to have another child at this point and am so happy with just my little one. But I don't want her to be resentful of me for not having any brothers or sisters for her. I have asked everyone I know that is an only child if they wished they had siblings and every single one of them said yes. So I don't know...then also I don't want to have a second just to make my first happy....it's hard. Also, I don't want to raise a spoiled brat. It's a lot to think about. If you are young, and you have time, I would wait awhile before you make any final decisions, otherwise, I would do some research and soul searching and see where it puts you. Plus, you have to think of the financial expense you'll be putting your family in.

I had my son at 19 and because he is now 13, I can't imagine starting over with another. I missed out on a lot of wonderful things (although I would never trade my son for anything). He was truly a gift. BUT...I am halfway to doing some things I never had the chance to experience.
Sometimes I think my son would have benefited from a sibling but it's a little late now.

I was the only child growing up. My dad travelled a lot and my mom worked a ton. I'm now 32 and married -- my wife had 2 brothers growing up.

Being the only child can be good and bad. My dad died about 6 years ago and it was incredibly hard to deal with and the entire time we were going though it, it would've been very nice to have a sibling that was going though the same thing and someone you could relate to. When dealing with family hardships, it would be nice to have someone else there.

I now have two kids -- 4 and 1. It was never in the cards for us to only have one....

I have a 10 year old (soon to be 11 years old next month) and I do not regret having just one. Why one? Because that's all I wanted.
