I am both a commercially rated pilot and a certified airframe and powerplant mechanic.
There is a greater chance of you being injured or killed on the trip to the airport than in the airplane flying.
Yes, accidents do happen and they splash them all over the news for several days. If they headlined deaths in cars, trucks, and buses the way they do aircraft that is all the news would be.
Take it from me, airplanes are a very safe method of travel. They are engineered and constructed to fly. The pilots go through continuous training in simulators that simulate any type of emergency. Aircraft go through mechanical checks every so many hours. There are A, B, C, and D checks each one progressively more intense. The D check almost disassembles the aircraft and inspects everything.
The only times you will feel any real sensations is on take-off roll and on approach to landing and landing. The rest of the flight should be smooth once you reach altitude.
Sit back and enjoy the flight. If you have a window seat look for things on the ground that you may recognize and have fun!

there is nothing much u cn do once u inside a plan .. unless ofcourse u r the pilot !
anyways ive been travelling by plane since i was 5 (4 times a year - sometimes 6) every year and now i am 21 !!! from that date nothing ever happened to any of the planes and everytime i ride one i get scared !! i dont know why is that .. i think men werent meant to fly !! we were made to walk ! and maybe swim but not fly lol !!
to be honest travelling by planes is meant to be the safest transport and it is an amazing experience if u know how to use it .. i always look from the window and those clouds and mountains underneath is just enough to take my mind away !! it is the best epxerience in the world !!
go on it its only few hours or minutes then u reach ur distination and ull be very happy ! think nice thoughts and good things will happen !

Depending on your age, you may find having a couple of alcoholic beverages make you more relaxed. If you are not of drinking age then I can suggest: having a bag of sweets with you on the plane and suck on these before take off. Sit either in the window seat or next to, advice the staff on the plane that you are frightened and they will look after you. If you think things are that bad - then go to a chemist and see what herbal relaxants you can take (again you may need to seek permission from your guardian / parent(s).

We have travelled to & from Australia for the last 14 years clocking up 728 hours in the air pluss many trips to other destinations you are safer on a plane than on the roads. Take you mp3 player to get you out of the boredom.

This always works for me as I am afraid of heights....
20 minutes before boarding, find the nearest pub or restaurant in the airport. Take a double shot of something tasty and use a screwdriver as a chaser. That calms my nerves and helps me get my @** on the plane. Honest to goodness...nothing else works for me. I've tried meditating, breathing deeply, taking Tylenol PM, listening to elevator music - all to no avail.
Happy travels! :-)

I just flew for the first time this past October and I was in the same exact boat you are in. I had my iPod on as soon as I sat down in the plane. I closed my eyes, turned the music up and just took some deep breaths. Luckily during take off my mom held my hand so it wasn't too nerve wracking. Once we were up in the sky it was kinda neat looking down on everything once you get comfortable. Just remember millions of people fly everyday, just relax and enjoy. Good Luck!

Try not to look out the window! Unless the plane trip is a bumpy ride, you probably will forget you are moving if you bring a book to read or some music to listen to. It's like being in a car, sorta--if you don't look out the windows, you can't feel the car moving.

Bring something on the plane to distract you like an iPod or a magazine. Pray for a safe flight, and remember that traveling by plane is safer than traveling by car.

Let the Airline know beforehand and ask for help. They can be surprisingly sympathetic and helpful. Just remember that it is safer to travel by plane than by car. Relax, sit back, and forget you are flying just concentrate on a film.

there are courses you can go on to overcome this but i wouldnt know where to begin to look for them if depends on where you live ,
i was scared of heights for years, they say facing your fears is the best so i did a solo parachute jump from 3500 ft close to stonehenge i almost shat myself(excuse the language)going up as there was no door and i was opposite it,scared but i dhad 8 other people behind me who couldnt jump unless i did and i didnt want to let the charity down so i jumped,on the way down my lines tangled and i started to spin but the training they give you is excellent, got sorted and landed fine(well on my bum)now i love flying, heights and the rush.i now jump from 130000ft doing spins etc, so trust me if i can do it you can be positive think of the good time youre going to have when you get to where your going and the nice hotel room statistacally its preety safe to fly trust me ive been through it all
