my daughter suffered permanent brain damage because we fell for that bullshit about all natural childbirth / midwife. i dont care if the midwife has delivered over 500 babies, they are not equiped to detect fetal distress untill it's too late. if you care about your child go to a doctor and forget about the tree huggin hippie bullshit.

It's not a craze... it's been around forever and hospital birth didn't get popular until recently. I'm from The Netherlands and nowadays only 29% of kids are born at home, but when I was born two decades ago that number was a lot higher, and before then even higher than that.
Drugs affect the baby, negatively. Also, some of the drugs you get can make your labor last longer. Unless you're high risk, natural births are safer for both baby and mother, and even home births are slightly safer than hospital births.
Plus, having to drive to the hospital while in labor doesn't sound appealing to me, nor does lying in a strange environment while giving birth.
Do some research... I'd recommend Henci Goer's book.
Edit: Oh, and if you give birth at a hospital, you often have to wait for the anesthesiologist to show up before you can have an emergency operation (especially at night when lots of hospitals don't have the staff present at the hospital), so it doesn't matter whether you're in the ambulance for 10 minutes or lying in the hospital 10 minutes.

Believe it or not Midwives actually have as much education if not more than your average doctor. Woman choose midwives for the personal feel to the delivery. They have decided that they do not want drugs and all of the medical going ons during the delivery. However, the midwife is prepared in case of an emergency to transport the woman to the hospital. It is all in what the mother and father to be want.

Childbirth for thousands of years was assisted with no doctors and was done with mid-wives or even solo.
Doctors are only needed if there are complications.
A lot of people today are getting back to their roots.
Giving birth with a midwive is a natural helpful way to feel better through the labor, a mid-wive can help soothe, give you a massage and knows techniques to help alleviate some pain of the labor. A doctor does none of this, their job is to simply deliver the baby, a nurse will give some advice but their job is to simply monitor the baby and you.
I commend all mid-wifes!

Midwives are great if you're having no complications. One thing with a midwife is your chance of having a c-section drops considerably. A midwife is more likely to give your body the time you need and a more natural labor and birth. You can have your baby at home and your movement doesn't get confined to a bed.
OB's are great for pregnancies like mine. I have previa so the hospital is my ideal setting. It's good to have choices that you can fit into your needs even when they are not always what you wanted.

I had a doctor at my first pregnancy and midwives for the rest and I would rather go with a Midwife. They are highly trained for your delivery and they do not push natural childbirth. They are more personal and they give you that much needed attention during the birth process. They also are trained enough that if an emergency situation arises they let the docs take over.

midwife craze?? they've been around for a while you know!
in the uk you have a midwife, thats how it is unless there a reason why not. they are specailists in antenatal care, delivery and post natal care.
midwives have gas n air and pethidine injections, and if you chose to be in a hospital rather than home or a midwife unit you can have all the extra drugs too as docs are there in background.
do you think they just get the midwives off the street without training or pay? do some reading!!!!

A midwife is just that... a medically educated and licensed professional. Unless there is an complication in your labor, a midwife should be able to handle it.
I think you are thinking of a natural birth, which involves no pain relief. To which I can just say.. each to their own.

well if you want drugs, fine thats your choice. If you want drugs that pass the placenta into your baby, fine thats your choice.
Some women choose to have a midwife. Thats fine thats their choice. I'd have a midwife any day over an OB. Just because an OB is medically educated and licensed doesn't mean he/she knows squat about the normal process of labor and birth. Most midwives know this and respect this.

Well here in the UK you automatically get a midwife. They are specially trained to help women give birth, unliike a doctor who is generally trained in everything, and obviously tends to see things from a medical perspective. Childbirth is a natural process, its not an illness!

I have a midwife and I love them. They are medically educated and liceneced. And they do not push the whole natural thing on you either. They will give you the drugs if you want them. So to each her own I guess.
