What's your reasoning and where did you hear that??

I'm not trying to be rude with my question or anything. I understand that they bite, but after a few times of telling them no and not letting them finish nursing, they get the point.

Also, just because they can chew food doesn't mean they don't need milk or formula. They still need it for at least a year.

Because they are misinformed, and because most people are uncomfortable with a breastfeeding toddler. I nursed my son until he was 3 (almost 4) and my 2 1/2 year old daughter is still nursing. Unless a person has actually nursed a toddler, then they really can't speak intelligently about the subject. I have never bottle-fed my children, so I can't speak intelligently about that subject. You can't even feel the child's teeth while they are actively nursing, unless they bite you. If that happens, it is easily corrected. Thanks for asking this - great question!

Not all cultures or people believe that breastfeeding should be stopped just because your baby or toddler has teeth. There are many woman today that have nursed their children to age 3 and 4 and sometimes even longer. I think it is each woman's decision on how comfortable she is with it. My sister has breastfed all six (6) of her children. The oldest one is 18 and the youngest is 3. The three year old just stopped breast feeding a few months ago. The 7 year old only stopped because his baby sister was born. He was 4. If both Mother and baby/child are getting comfort from the act then do it as long as you like. Why I personally don't agree with a woman breastfeeding a 6 or 7 year old (yes this does occur) I cannot condemn her either. After a certain age it no longer is an act of feeding but an act of comfort.

Its because American people have no biological or historical perspective. What on earth do they think happened before bottles and fake milk when babies got teeth?

Moms learned to cope and taught baby some nursing manners.

People like to make up all sorts of arbitrary breastfeeding myths. Most of which fly right in the face of biology and REALITY. Like if they are old enough to ask... or it has no nutrients after (insert random time limit here)... Or my baby was allergic to my milk (which was probably juat something in the mother's diet that could be eliminated)...

My husband thinks I should stop nursing when my daughter is either 6 months or gets teeth, what ever comes first. i think it is because this nation isn't a breastfeeding nation. Formula feeding is more common and more accepted. I plan on nursing until both my baby and I feel that we are done. I will take cues from her and my own body. No one else.

I think this comes from not wanting to get bitten. That was the only reason I stopped with my oldest son. He was about 10 months old and every time he would fall asleep on my breast I would try to lay him down and each time he would wake up and bite down before I could unlatch him. After the 4th time I started pumping until he was 18 months.

Even after that experience, I did breastfeed my 2 younger children and never got bit again.

well most people in America say stop breast feeding at the age 1 year old. In the UK they say 3 years of age. In Russa kids breast feed up to 8 years old!
I am NOT a Docter but I have heared the longer a child breast feeds the heather he or she is.
I'm a AANR I'm Open minded, but after 10 years old I would stop it.
3 years old Ok, buy 5 years old the child can drink whole milk. And he or she does not want Mommy coming into class breast feeding. I talk to Moms I know its hard to give up. It bonds you two. It's hard but at 3 to 5 let the child spread his or her wings!

Don't know but I guess it's because most people think they will get bitten. My youngest got his first tooth at 5 months, that would have been far too early to stop feeding him! He has bitten me a few times but he has learned not to now. He is now 14 months and still feeding, not for much longer though cause there is a new baby on the way!

I didn't I breastfed my daughter until she was 14 months and she had 8 teeth; she did bite me a couple times but I would thump her hand and tell her no and stopped nursing her and gave her a bottle (which she didn't like). She only did it those few times and didn't do it again. My son (almost 8 months) has only bit me once and I did the same thing to him and he hasn't done it since then.

While it does hurt when they bite down, ( i'm still feeding my 15mth old)it is recomended by the world health organization that you exclusively bf for the first 6mths with ongoing for up to 2 yrs. but each to their own i guess. although i would like to just also mention that it is a natural thing and i do hope that one day it becomes more widely accecpted in our society to breast feed our children.

My son had three or four teeth at 18months and I was still nursing him. I never had problems with him biting.

Women needn't stop nursing if their babies have teeth, unless, of course, they do start chomping down. I was lucky enough not to have that problem with my son.
