It has always been easier to destroy than to create.

War is the quick and easy way to take what the other tribe has, vital resources. Come on, we're not in Iraq to foster democracy or suppress terrorism. We're there to guard our oil supply, to keep the Islamic countries from cutting us off. The 1974 embargo was a picnic compared to the disaster (for us) an embargo would be now. Don't for a second imagine our President is the dumb good ole boy of his public image. His first year in office, when asked if he'd keep or replace someone in the Defense Department (I think it was), instead of saying "six of one, half a dozen of the other" as you might expect from a Texan, he said "zero sum," a term straight out of mathematical game theory.

Americans want to believe we're the good guys. We're not.

The Earth is an inanimate object and has no way to be fascinated; people are your concern here.

Many people are interested in the advancement of science and improvement of the quality of life for the masses. However, many cultures or religions seem focused on war or domination. Other times, it is one leader who convinces others to follow.
But many people, many many many people, are just trying to survive; to eat and raise their children. Look at the poverty in the world and you will see that most people on the earth are NOT fascinated with war, but are just trying to live. It is only a few powerful nations or people that even have the ability to war. and war or civil strife in less wealthy nations is often based on survival and those groups trying to get ahead.

Did you ever try to read a scientific paper? How about a spy thriller or war novel? Which would keep your attention?

There is 1/2 of the world that does not have what the other 1/2 has, so they use force to get what they want, or try to spread their ideology by force. They don't respond to reason, only force. That's called war.

why separate the two.
all of mans greatest inventions have come from war.
many major medical industrial and scientific advances have been the result of war.
maybe the lack of major technological breakthrough over the last few decades is the lack of any major wars.
i am not promoting war, but it has always furthered science.
kind of a catch 22, true peace on Earth would inevitably be the end of the technological advancement of mankind.
I hope i never see that day.

War is easy. Point, shoot, bang your dead, I win. Science is hard. You never see kids running around "playing science". There is no Einstein "action figure" that I know of. War lets you get out your aggression and possibly ends a conflict where you get your way. Science on the other hand makes you feel stupid and only leads to other questions. If we as a race want to change or future we need to change our thinking. We need to stop taking the easy way out and start working hard on our problems. Children need to know the value of hard work and society needs to reward that.

If you look back at all of history, almost every major advancement in human kind has come as a result of war. War is the driving force behind almost everything you know. Learn your history, then you can take a stand against something. Science created gun powder, science created the atomic bomb, science is creating better armor for soldiers. Without war, there never would have been the need for science.

Conscience-less, psychopathic, leaders [think Hitler] rise to power with masses behind them. Civilized Societies must meet these evils with greater force or be doomed by the insatiable appetite for power, of said leader. It's not fascination, it's a sad fact.

What you fail to realize is that science has been the greatest benefactor of war! And another great cause of war is the who that gets to decide whats good for me!

Human nature. Mankind has never been the same since Eve took the apple. From that moment on we were doomed to thinkabout OURSELVES rather than everyone else. I guess we'd rather kill eachother than think about a way to save the planet.

I find this answer so much more simple:

War is inherent to nature. Man is a natural creature. Therefore, war is inherent to man.

Mankind's illusion is that it is separate from nature. While that is not true, mankind is the only (known) creature that is capable of attaining enlightenment.
