Hi! Which of these vessels(all in12 m.p.h. winds on the open see) would go the fastest?
Full ship
Bark
Schooner
Brigantine
Barquantine
Caravel
Sloop
and can all of these sail into the wind, or only the caravel and sloop? Thanks!

er, a few qualifiers:

speed of a boat is a function of waterline..........roughly max speed is the square root of the waterline times 1.25.....

the square rig is more efficient off the wind...relative wind from 90 to 180 degrees

so having said that; if you had 7 hulls all the same with the seven different rigs, a sloop first then a schooner would be faster going upwind , a) because it can head closer to the wind than a square rig say 45 degrees verses 65 degrees)

and the combination of a jib overlapping a main or foresail on the sloop / schooner would give additional lift

off the wind well, its a toss up except that a caravel with its ungainly rig would probably be last.....you'd probably give points to the bark because off the wind a full ship would carry little sail on its mizzen anyways to stay balanced.
