Shawn "Jay-Z" Carter ~ co-founder of Roc-A-Fella Records. Set up meeting at the United Nations For the Water for life charity, to thelp out the people in Africa to get clean water. Holds the annual "Christmas toy drive" in the Marcy Projects to give toys to the less fortunate in his old neighborhood. Among his many other achievments, he was the driving force behind the construction of the record label Roc-A-Fella Records and his positions as president of the record label Def Jam.

I think Jay-Z's pretty cool. He was born during the 20th century.

surely the coolest person of the 20th Century was actor Steve McQueen? He did a lot for charity in his lifetime, even making the big film studios donate stuff, so that he could give it to deprived kids in care homes.

How about Mick Jagger? Rock star, actor, and he brought down Communism in Eastern Europe and in Russia without even firing a shot! You could certainly make a compelling case that the influence of the Rolling Stones in the Soviet Union did more to bring about the collapse of communism than anything any US president did..

1. mahatma gandhi (i think everyone knows who he is, and calling him a holy man does not do him justice. calling him a politician is utterly incorrect. but one can say that he led india to her independence...but he was SO much more than that. many people say that [jawaharlal] nehru was too hasty in making a decision)

2. maria tallchief (she is a very famous, retired ballerina of [half] Native-American ancestry; her father was of the Osage tribe and her mother was Scotch-Irish. she had quite an impact on the performing arts)

3. richard p. feynman (famous and very humourous physicist. had a huge impact on the way physics is taught)

4. george balanchine (ballet master who redefined 20th century ballet)

5. j.k. rowling (though i don't think she has had a lot written about her; she's keeps her life very private)

6. deena kastor (american long-distance runner; one of my personal heroes)

7. paula radcliffe (british long-distance runner; another personal favourite)

8. indira gandhi (was prime minister of india and daughter of jawaharlal nehru. amazingly intelligent and compassionate lady)

9. martin luther king, jr (african-american leader who fought for black civil rights with grace and dignity)

10. hubert de givenchy (french designer of classicly tailored clothes. designed audrey hepburn's clothes in "sabrina"; had HUGE impact on the fashion world)

11. steven spielberg (one of the most talented film directorsof our time; watch his first film, "duel" it's terrifying without being gory; it's his cinematography that makes it so scary)

12. bill watterson (creator of the comic strip, "calvin&hobbes"; my favourite comic strip)

13. lance armstrong (amazingly strong-willed and candid 7- time winner of the tour de france AND cancer survivor)

14. neil armstrong (1st person on the moon)

15. jesse owens (african-american track & field athlete. read his story, you'll never believe anything is impossible again. there are many books about him. the link that follows is to an article in runner's world magazine: http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-243-297--11491-0,00.html

good luck! and i'd have written about audrey too if she wasn't "taken"!
