they grow up in places where multiple languages are spoken and it is easily picked up from the people around them. Growing up in a place like Africa, where there are so many languages, I know people that speak 2 or 3 languages, and I won't consider them smart. It depends on the languages spoken in your household.

Some Americans have a very narrow mindset. Many have never set foot out of their home state. So speaking a lot of languages might seem impressive to them. They think that having a lot of stuff or information in your head makes you smart. Some people just have a photographic memory or a talent for learning languages. That doesn't make them better than anybody. Anyways, monolingual speakers tend to be superior to mulilingual speakers when it comes to expression.

Generally, yes. Many of them are very open minded. You shouldn't have a problem. Try to learn some German though. Not only does it make you seem like a better American it will make you a more well rounded person... Also, German can be a beautiful language...especially Old German. And there are many brilliant novels and musical compositions written in German. You will also be able to understand more of the pop, rock, and hip hop over there. Just don't be ignorant about it. The seriousness and earnestness of Teutonic men can be attractive. Good luck.

Its because its tricky and a challenge to learn another language. Du kann nicht vehrstehen das? Most of the time English is exclusively spoken across the USA so there's little opportunity to pick up something else that people speak in unlike your time in Africa.

Ok this question has only one application. Most foreigners that come to America are smarter than the average American. Why? Well, why do you think they got here in the first place? Do you think it is easy to leave your homeland and start a life in a whole different country, without having some sort of intelligence? I'm not talking about the mexicans that come here to pick strawberries and dig turf. I'm talking about most Europeans and Asians. My mother and father both came here in 93 and they are doctors and engineers. Believe me, there are plenty idiots where they came from. They have brothers and sisters who are not doing much back home. They know more than one language as well... but they are not as smart as my parents. As far as intelligence... Most people from different countries are culturally intelligent. My grandfather who lived in his country his whole life knew every single American state and river, and all the presidents of the United States. Can you say the same about a different country? Thought so. Americans aren't smart because they choose not to be, not because they can't be. After all, aren't most Americans of European descent?

It is not commonplace for most Americans to know any other language fluently other than English and for many Americans, learning another language is considered hard.

I speak Dutch, English, and three dialects of Chinese (Mandarin, Haka, and Cantonese). To me, it is a matter of communication not of offense. It amazes people because Americans commonly speak one language or two.
