Nothing significant will happen. 2012 is simply when the current baktun of the Mayan calendar ends. A baktun is a 400 year period, and we are in the twelfth baktun. It is true that the Mayan calendar effectively ends on December 21, 2012, because for whatever reason the Mayans didn't extend the calendar beyond the end of the twelfth baktun. This doesn't mean that the Mayans believed the world would end at that point. I mean, during the 20th century, the civilized world created a computer timekeeping system that was incapable of recognizing dates beyond December 31, 1999. It doesn't mean we thought the world was going to end that day! Maybe the Mayans would have extended the calendar centuries ago if their civilization hadn't collapsed. And even if the Mayans did believe the world would end in 2012, that doesn't mean it actually will. Remember, every predicted date for the end of the world so far has been wrong! In any event, the termination of the Mayan "long count" calendar on December 21, 2012, is the main reason why that year has been singled out as the supposed date of the apocalypse.

The prediction is that the world will end on December 14, 2012. In my opinion, this is false because what were people saying would happen to computers when the 21 century was coming into place? They said computers will blow up, Jesus will come, and the world will end. It was all false {unless some people did really see Jesus, and some computers surely did blow up}. No need to worry my friend, the reason it is dated on December 14 is maybe because the Mayans had some errands to run and they did not have enough time to try and predict the future. Listening to this calendar b.s. is just like listening to a psychic. So once again, no need to worry, If anything I would be worried, I'm only 14 but I'm Christian and I don't believe in the same Gods the Mayans did (or do). Good Luck {No Worries}

All these types of predictions are hilarious. The Mayans knew nothing about what we consider time zones, for example. If anything were to happen out of the ordinary on that date to the entire world it would have to happen at a particular infinitely short time period, because otherwise it would be a different date somewhere. Also, the Mayans based whatever they had to say on readings of the stars, and those star configurations mean nothing (sorry, believers in astrology, they don't..it's a scam). Planetary alignments are much too weak to affect us directly, but there is a chance that such an alignment could affect the sun. (None in the past have, but facts don't seem to be important in predictions of the future).

To me, 12-21-2012 will just be the day after my birthday, and I would rather forget about that.

hey, who knows maybe it is the end of the world. Its mention that a lot of things are happening in 2012, such as the lining of the nine planets and its suppose to make some kind of force gravity that will put the earth out of its revolution with the sun. Another thing is the shift of the polar magnetic were it will destroy the ozone layer and there will be no protection against the sun. There's also another legend in another culture Buddhism. I forgot the name of the legend but its mention that two dimensions will clash in the year 2012. And in Christianity by the Jewish calendar of existence we are in the seven thousand although they will will tell you that we are in the year five thousand and something. And the year seven thousand its suppose to be special because its the second coming. So its interesting how the different cultures agree with one year, and also how cultures, religion, natural science events agree that the year 2012 will be very special.
But regarding the end of the world its when we die, and its a true fact that we are going to die, so the end of the world its when we die, who knows it might be even be an accident.

Absolutely nothing out of the ordinary will happen on that date. The Mayan calendar ends then, but so what? My calendar ends on December 31st 2007, but I don't suppose anything bad will happen then.

In the years I have been actively using the internet, I have seen at least five predictions for the date of the end of the world, and all five have come and gone with not even a slight whiff of anything unusual happening. I'll believe the end of the world is coming when it comes.

The same thing that happened on the four doomsday predictions that have already come and gone during my life. At least that I remember or knew about. There may have been more.
Dec. 21, 2012...
It will be the winter solstice in the northern hemisphere. Lots and lots of people will be finishing their Christmas shopping and visiting relatives for the holidays. Hopefully I'll still be around as my grandson will be about to have his 6th birthday.
And all this will come to pass. Amen.

Well, given the fact that they have been correct about several other predicted events, I honestly think that it is possible for something to happen on that day. Going by the fact that the calendar ends of that day, I do believe it is quite possible for something interesting to happen on that day. However, what will happen, we may never know. Will I become worried when that day hits? No, because it's always suitable to just build a bunker just in case the apocalypse happens.

The Mayans did not wipe themselves out. Like many native cultures they were destroyed by Europeans. In this case it was Spain. As for that date I am sure the sun will rise in the east and set in the west.

What will happen? Probably me sitting at a computer answering questions about some future "end of the world" date and whether it will be the end of the world.

I wonder what culture has thought up a date that is after that one, but still relatively close. I am sure we will all find out.

I could be wrong but from what I understand of the aztec calender they are pretty similar the end of a cyle comes and a new one begins. Aztecs started teaching there medicine and culture at the end of their cycle, and so begins a new one of including everyone in their teachings. not alot is known about both cultures and you cant believe everything that you read because there was no one who taught it, they guessed. So think positive, whenever there is an end there is a beginning.
