AJAX stands for Asynchronous JavaScript And XML (or XHTTP Request), it is a new method for websites to send and retrieve data back to the server without forcing a refresh of the page you are looking at.
Or it is a well-known household cleaner.

Ajax (also known as AJAX), shorthand for "Asynchronous JavaScript and XML", is a development technique for creating interactive web applications. The intent is to make web pages feel more responsive by exchanging small amounts of data with the server behind the scenes, so that the entire web page does not have to be reloaded each time the user requests a change. This is intended to increase the web page's interactivity, speed, functionality, and usability.

To illustrate, go to this product page and click through the alternate views of the product images. You'll see how quickly the product image changes...this is because it uses AJAX technology to quickly call the database to load in the images via an XML feed instead of refreshing the entire page to make the call.

It is using javascript to perform calls to java code on the server. Like if you have a dropdown box. normally you would have to have the user refresh the page to get a call from the database. With ajax it does it in javascript and you don't have to worry about refreshing the page. there is alot you can do with ajax.
