The Saxons held a moot (a meeting) in which they elected their leaders by popular acclaim. Now we can't all fit in the same meeting and we have secret ballots, but we do the same. It is popular vote that determines all but the Presidency.

Teachers are quick to point to Greece as the cradle of democracy, but the truth is the English speaking countries owe far more to the Saxons with the traditions of free speech and election of their leaders.

That is such a broad question. I would recommend you ask again. First of all, what do you mean by ancient. Caveman, before christ, after christ....?
Second, different civilizations in the world had different costumes.
There are still tribes in the current world. Mostly leaders are selected by, strength, wisdom and leadership skills. If you want a more specific answer I recommend you ask a specific question.
