When do you use the standard error of the mean vs. standard deviation?

I assume you are talking about finding z-scores. You use standard error (std deviation/ sqrt(n)) when you are dealing with a sample mean. You use only std deviation when you are dealing with a single trial.

The standard deviation is used to in knowing how far spread apart the set of numbers is. If you were to graph the information from the sets then you could that number from the standard deviation to express the spread of the data.
