Motherboard - Asus P5B premium, or some variant of 680i if you want SLI

Processor - Core 2 Duo E6600 - one of the best ones you can buy.

Graphics card - depending on how mcuh you wanna pay...

Top of the top - nVidia 8800 Ultra - but I don't reccomend bnuying it, unless money really is no subject.

Top - the nVidia 8800 GTX - offers about 10% less perfomance than the Ultra, but costs about 25% less - which is about a £100. In this case - trust me, uless you are going to play at very high resolutions, then this card will have no slowdowns in the vast majority of today's top games.

Mid-range - nVidia 8800 GTS 640 MB - this card offers very good performance, costs about a £100 less than the GTX and offers about 25% less performance.

Mid-range - nVidia 8800 GTS 320 MB - this card's performance is almost identical to it's big brother the 640 MB version, but costs again about a 100 less. The catch here is that with some games which have a lot of rich textures it might struggle as it has less memory.

When I buy a computer I dont shop by brand name, but more for the most computing power for the best price. Ive owned many different brands and they all worked fine. Shop around for the best deal and look online to compare prices. As for the hdd you should get one with a 16MB cache for more speed. Look at the statistics for the mainboard to see which one will give you the most speed.

This is a reasonable spec for a high-end machine. There is not much to choose among processors, as the speeds do not vary much nowadays; get the fastest single-core processor you can find. (Multiple cores will not help in your application.) Also, pay attention to the memory speed; this is actually more important than processor speed. I have no advice on video cards.

Builting your own computer will by its very nature produce exactly what you want, cheaper than a prebuilt and is a deeply satisfying experience.
