My doctor said less than 300mg of caffeine per day was all right - more than that may affect the baby's nervous system.

I hardly touched any caffeine with my first but with my second I drank tea. And sometimes had a diet soda in the afternoon when I was dying for a treat and pick-me-up.

Is it possible to answer these questions w/out completely judging the person who is asking? In any case, my dr. said less than 300 milligrams a day is ok but it is a personal decision every woman needs to make for themselves. Read below:

Do I have to give up caffeine now that I'm pregnant?

Not necessarily. You can still enjoy your favourite caffeinated drinks as long as you don't overdo it. Guidelines issued by the Food Standards Agency recommend that women have no more than 300mg of caffeine a day while pregnant. This is equivalent to three mugs of instant coffee or six cups of tea or eight cans of cola per day. Although moderate amounts of caffeine are unlikely to harm you or your unborn baby, some women choose to cut out caffeine completely.

i drank both coffee and regular soda while I was pregnant. My doc just said keep it to a minimum. Like 2 8oz cups or 1 12-20oz regular soda. I love Coke and she just told me to keep it in check and make sure that I got tons of water and juice through out the rest of the day. A little caffeine will not hurt you unless your doc says no for some reason. If your doc says no to caffeine then there may be a medical reason and ask why. Just a little fact about caffeine and babies...maybe it will make you feel a little more assured... they give caffeine to preemies in the hospital to help keep them alive in the basic sense. Good Luck and Congrats!!

Well, that depends on the caffeiene content of the soda, but in all likelihood two sodas aonw't do any harm. It is known that 400mg of caffeine a day leads to issues such as delayed repiratory development and ADD. So they recommend not going over 300mg, just to be safe. A can of Coke only has 65mg, so two cans of Coke is no big deal. But if you're having 2 extra-large Mountain Dews, you may be going into the danger zone. I'll send you a link to a website about caffeine content of certain products. I think you'll find that you're in the safe range.

I had to quit drinking coffee because it makes me nauseous and jittery, I guess the baby doesn't like it! However, I do have one or two cups of earl grey tea a day, it's really soothing and doesn't upset my stomach like the coffee did. I gave up smoking and alcohol and caffeinated soda so I say I can have one little vice left over, right? I would say just drink less than you did before you became pregnant, everything in moderation.

As per babycenter.com:

Keep under 300mg of caffeine a day. Anything over that and you have a higher risk of high blood pressure and miscarriage. Soda contains about 30-60 mg a can.

You might want to rethink artificial sweeteners, too, though doctors think it is usually safe in moderation (1-2 cans a day) and is hardly comparable to something legitimately dangerous (smoking, drinking, etc).

For what it is worth, I drank a soda about twice a week during pregnancy. I had no problems. Try fruit juice spritzers, they are delicious and got me through my soda cravings! Good luck!

they say up to 2 cups of coffee is OK. since pop has less caffeine than coffee then you should be OK. however, my doc put it like this....you (meaning me) might know how you react to caffeine or alcohol. you might not feel 1 drink or 2 but you weight 150 pounds with a tolerance build up to both. you have a fetus about the size of a grape...with no tolerance built up at all...you could have a little buzzed (on either caffeine or alcohol) baby in there. i didn't quit completely but i only had a caffeinated drink when i REALLY craved one and i didn't drink liquor at all.
congrats and good luck

Just limit your intake. You can still have some. I do believe 300mg is the advisable amount. That's about 2 cups of coffee, or 3 sodas. BUT go online and try to find the caffiene levels per the drinks you drink. Mtn. Dew has the highest, so try not to drink that. Sometimes ya need that extra boost of a regular Coke. It won't kill your baby or mutate it, as one poster suggested. Caffiene doesn't hurt kids, its just not advisable for high dosages. Hell, my preemie babies were GIVEN oral caffiene for the first 4 months of their lives, as per doctor's orders. Best of luck.

I asked my doctor and she said it was ok as long as I was drinking PLENTY of water.. The thing is, I hate water! So she recommended that I flavor my water. I started buying little packets in Lemonade, raspberry, passion fruit flavor to make my water tastier. Well, it worked. Now I'm able to drink just plain water without a problem! I do have my occasional drink from starbucks now and then but I try to limit myself to one caffeine drink a day. BTW, starbucks strawberry lemonade is awesome- no caffeine, but its so good.
