In reference to an answer. I have 1 gig of ram, and my video card is mid to high level, so can I just upgrade the motherboard and processor and keep the other stuff I have to reduce the cost?

It would actually probably be cheaper to upgrade the RAM as high as it will go, versus swapping out the entire motherboard/processor. There will certainly be less chance for error or incompatiblity. Maxing out the RAM is the cheapest way to squeak some extra speed out of the computer.

What processor do you have and sockett type on your motherboard. What motherboard? Have you heard of overclocking? Depending on the manufacturer of the motherboard, there might be a program available for download that can adjust the clock speed of the processor and regulate the core temperature of the processor so you don't end up frying it. I have an ASUS A8N-Sli Deluxe. It has a utility program called AI booster. Also what operating system do you have. If it is XP, where do you want your speed? Surfing the internet (Cache) or Programs? You can adjust this setting in control panel,to system, to advanced, performance, click settings, the advanced tab. There you can adjust according to your preferences. Note the paging file size. This is the amount of Hard disk space your computer uses to give your system more Ram. Too much of this ties up the processor speed, Too little of this slows down the Ram speed. My processor is a 4GHZ AMD Athlon, I have 2047 mb of paging file space. I can play a video on another monitor and surf the web on another and click click clickity click. Page after page just pops open like snapping your fingers. But I don't even have a very fast Hard Drive. I got 2 gigs of ram. But to be honest i saw little change in speed between 1 gig and 2 gig when I added more. Mostly because my processor is fast. And I mean fast. I'm not even overclocked. My motherboard is available for less than $200 and I think I would get the premium board with the cool and quiet heat tube. You can pick up a used processor on Ebay cheaper that $200. Use your other hardware temporarily untill you can upgrade peice by piece. Check the stats of the premium board.

or my board, the duluxe. I say sweet!

The processor costs more than the board. Check out the Ram compatability with this board first. This board will accept IDE/ATA and SATA hard drives and dvd/cd-rom drives. I am sure your current graphice card will work I have a nVidia GeForce series 6600GT 256mb/DDR3 PCI-Express TV-OUT/DVI DirectX 9
But check out all the possibilities of this motherboard. Dual SLI graphics, 4GIGS of ram can support 2000GB of Hard drives and RAID utilitys to boot. An awesome security and virus protected BIOS.
Hope I was of great assistance. I'm extremely happy with my computer.

You can if you buy a motherboard that supports the same type of ram and video card that you already have. Go to Pricewatch.com--look in cpu/motherboard combos. The best prices I have found are on this website.

The cheapest way would be to upgrade the RAM, double it, if the pc is recently purchased the board would be pretty up to date, if it's a new pc. If you have the cash upgrade the processor too

Doesn't matter how much RAM you have if you overload it. Please check my checklist.

- set wallpaper and screensavers to blank or none — they run continuously in the background and use memory.
- review your start menu – remove anything you don’t need on a daily basis — load games, etc. on an as-needed basis.
- from Internet Explorer, Tools, Internet Options: delete cookies, delete files (offline), and clear history.
- run Disk Cleanup, Scandisk, Defrag at least every two weeks (the more frequently they are run, the less time they take).
- periodically, click Start, Programs, Run — they type ipconfig renew
(that’s ipconfig space renew).
These things should increase speed and free up memory as much as possible.
It will also help if you download two free programs: Ad-aware and Spybot.

Yes you can upgrade, you will need to make sure what you buy is compatible with you old parts.

If the older Graphics card is AGP style, you may be better of doing a complete upgrade as that technology is getting very hard to upgrade.
