It's my husband's 40th birthday and I want to take him somewhere unique. We live in the area and I still can't think of anything truely different and fun for the night. My initial ideas of what I am looking for for would be like a cool hotel on a peak or nestled in the woods or something with unusual immenities or activities. Just something that would make it a special experience. Any ideas???

You could drive into the Sierra Foothills for a mountain getaway. There are some wonderful bed and breakfast inns, great restaurants, and world class wineries where you can sample wines. Another fun thing to do is explore some of the caves in the area.

Celeste is right, Safari West in Sonoma is a wonderful idea. Other interesting stays include...

How about Calistoga Ranch in Calistoga? It's rural, and there's horseback riding and such.
