the song is by Patty Griffin, the Dixies covered it.
the song is from a mans perspective, he has died and he is looking back at his life and all the things he regrets doing.
"the songbird" is someone who he has hurt, and he hates himself for it.

I went and read the lyrics...sounds like a guy is talking basically saying that he has drug his wife down by staying w/ her..she could have been something more to someone else...she could have done better..etc.........
Reading the lyrics always helps me if i dont fully understand a song.....

Its basically about a man who looks back on his life, and sees all the mistakes he has made, and all the things he had never done. The little songbird is someone whose dreams he has hurt and discouraged.
