This happened to me in a strange way, but not totally.
I took a ride and found out the driver didn't take any credit or debit cards!
I had to have him wait in the car while I went to an ATM.
He was so rude about it...he said THIS ISN'T A BANK, WHAT DO I WANT THAT CARD FOR!
I tipped him anyway, to let him know I am not a deadbeat.
If that happened and all it was was that, I don't want to imagine what NOT HAVING MONEY would be like...

If I don't have enough money with me, I ask the driver to wait until I get some from the house. Most are OK, but others ask for your cellphone until they see the money

Oh my goodness, I don't think I'd have the guts to take a taxi if I didn't KNOW I had the money to pay. I suppose if your destination was home, you could run in and grab some money.

call someone in the building to come and pay and I'd give them the money later...
but i suggest to check your pockets before you take a ride in a cab!
