It most likely means that you exhibit a personality that isn't common. They are probably worn out by what they see as the average person's problems and perhaps your honesty or kindness is not something they see in most people thus it refreshes them.

Someone said this to me recently. It was a guy who came in my local hangout. He'd never been before and at my bar, people are kind of cliquey and it's possible to be ostracized if you don't know anyone or you don't look "cool enough." So, this guy tries to include himself in our conversation a couple times, but the guys were being total azzes and making the guy feel stupid and I could see it all over this guy's face that he was feeling like an outcast.
So I started talking to him and engaging him in our conversation, which prompted the guys to talk to him. The guy turned out being a nice guy. He told me that I was refreshing and that I make people feel good.
So, i'm thinking that refreshing means just that. It's having charisma! Good thing. Kudos.
