Go to networksolutions.com or godaddy.com and input the domain name you want to see if it is available. If it is not it will give you suggestions of things that are available. Follow the prompts to create it. If you want email to go to it add that option as you sign up.

Please don't choose godaddy they really suck and try to sell you things you don't need.
For a .com/.net/.org I'd recommend Namecheap (http://www.namecheap.com/)
You'll also probably need a host for your site/email as a domain is literally just a name, although Namecheap can forward emails recieved to another address -e.g. your yahoo or hotmail, and forward your .com to another website
yahoo me or msn martin@maniacmartin.com and I can guide you through it
