It says something like "if its the first time, restart the computer..." but we tried that and it keeps taking it back to the same blue screen. Any suggestions...it also says if we have anti virus installed to uninstall it, but how do we do that if the screen wont change?

Restart your computer and tap on the F8 key and try to boot up in Safe Mode..see if you can get in that way.. If not, when do you get the blue screen? Does the computer boot up at all, or does it go blue when windows should start?

Hit the f8 key during the boot sequence, select safemode w/ command prompt and type fixmbr at the prompt. That should fix it. if that doesnt work boot with the windows disk in the cd rom and do a repair at the second repair prompt. The first one, repair using recovery disk is not what you want. The one for you is a couple screens forward of there. Good Luck.

Before doing a destructive "format and reload" of your entire system, read the information on the below listed web site. It covers the use of the Window's Recovery Console.

Lightning struck my friend's house and her computer became history.

This will take some effort on your part.

I am not a tech expert, but if you have the "Blue Screen of Death," please read the information below. After that I would suggest a Windows Repair in Safe Mode. I will include information on that, also.

Blue Screen of Death
The Blue Screen of Death (sometimes called "bluescreen", "stop error" or just abbreviated as "BSOD") is the popular name for the screen displayed by Microsoft's Windows operating system when it cannot recover from, or is in danger of being unable to recover from, a system error (the Microsoft term is Stop error). There are two Windows error screens that are both referred to as the blue screen of death, with one (Windows NT 4/2000/XP/Vista) being significantly more serious than the other (Windows 9x). There are several causes of the blue screen popping up. It can be a poorly-written device driver, bad memory, damaged registry or usage of incompatible versions of DLLs (see more on the "Types of blue screens" section).
The blue screen of death in one form or another has been present in all Windows operating systems since Windows version 3.1. It is the successor of the less well-known black screen of death that occurs in OS/2 as well as MS-DOS[1]. In early builds of Windows Vista it was complemented with a red screen of death, used for boot loader errors.

SAFE MODE
Windows XP Safe Mode

This is an excellent link – explains well and includes screen shots.

1. To get into the Windows 2000 / XP Safe mode, as the computer is booting press and hold your "F8 Key" which should bring up the "Windows Advanced Options Menu" as shown below. Use your arrow keys to move to "Safe Mode" and press your Enter key.
2. Note: With some computers if you press and hold a key as the computer is booting you will get a stuck key message. If this occurs, instead of pressing and holding the "F8 key", tap the "F8 key" continuously until you get the startup menu.
3. Trouble Getting into Windows 2000 or Windows XP Safe mode - If after several attempts you are unable to get into Windows 2000 or Windows XP safe mode as the computer is booting into Windows, turn off your computer. When the computer is turned on the next time Windows should notice that the computer did not successfully boot and give you the safe mode screen.

When you come out of Safe Mode, you may find your desktop icons out of order. Just drag them back.
