All fuel sold in the UK has to comply with technical standards which ensure that, for example, lubricity and sulphur content are appropriate for modern engines whilst also being suitable for the wide range of older engine technologies in use.
Some of the 'premium brands' offer enhanced additive packages for claimed improved performance or fuel economy.
But it's best to think of these as being premium products at premium prices rather than think of the supermarkets or other cheaper suppliers offering inferior products.

Where is there cheap petrol? The local Tesco or Asda is only a penny or two cheaper than BP.I would hardly call it cheap petrol.I have used primarily Tesco petrol in my car for the past 4 years and have not suffered any problems at all.Whether there is a mile or two difference in MPG is neither here nor there. It is not worth worrying about.

There is no difference in the quality of the petrol when manufactured. Some companies use addatives in their petrol and that makes the difference.

the petrol comes from the same depo that fefine all petrol for shell jet & supermarkets
its just supermarkets can sell it cheaper as they buy in bulk and not by the lorry load per week
they will have a lorry per day.

"basic" petrol is much the same whoever you get it from. There are of course occasional lapses in quality. Shell, BP, Texaco all offer an improved blend with supposed benefits. I use about 50:50 supermarket and allegedly superior blends.

shell,bp,esso and texaco have additives in the fuel which modern cars benefit from. cheap petrol will infact wear your parts out and if used for say a 3 year period your engine would be ruined.
the additves clean and lubricate the engine parts and help to protect modern engines.

i agree with lisa t, but the petrol you buy at supermarkets is the lowest grade you can buy and wouldent be sold by reputable petrol stations, if used over a long time supermarket petrol will do damage to your engine.
