Make sure you have the most recent USB and Chipset drivers installed for your motherboard. Go to your motherboard or computer manufacturer's site and download them.

1. Restart computer.
2. Try another usb flash drive.
3. Try another USB port.
4. Check Windows Update to see if there is a newer driver for the USB card.
5. If nothing works in that USB port, contact the manufacturer of your computer and see if its under warranty.
6. If Not, try adding a new USB Hi-Speed 2.0 PCI-card, or maybe re-installing windows.

I agree with Yoi_55, but I would recommend a bit more troubleshooting than that.

Try your USB key on another computer. If it works there, then you can confidently assume it's not the USB key. Try a different USB port on the problem computer. A bad USB port can cause a computer to lockup and or reboot when something it doesn't like is inserted. Try another USB key in the problem computer, do they have the same problem? Try buying / borrowing a USB hub, plug that into the computer, and the connect the USB key to the hub. If the computer has a problem with the hub or hub / usb key combo, then I would definitely make sure that you have the most recent USB chipset drivers for your computer or motherboard.

If you have a brand name computer like a Dell, Gateway, etc, then go to their website for the latest drivers for your model. If you bought a computer built for you or you built it yourself, then go to the motherboard manufacturer's website and download the drivers for that model. Good luck.

xp should have the drivers for it. but you can install the driver from the disk that came with it or from the flash drive manufacturers web site. you may be able to use usb2 if you have sp2 installed and your hardware is usb2. In any event the drive will be compatible with usb1.1. My guess is that the usb controller is corrupt. check the motherboard's manufacturer for a chipset driver.
