When I was in grammar school( late 1950's) they were teaching that not only was 'y' sometimes a vowel, they had 'w' in that same 'netherworld' category.I suppose you wanted an actual EXAMPLE, though. Maybe in the word "Why?" If the vowel, if it contains one, is not the 'h', then it must be either the 'y' , the 'w', or both.
also, i'm afraid that while close, df came up with the word 'why' first
