Damir N, I am very happy to answer this question. First of all in a game if the pitcher walkes in a run that is not classified as an earned run. The only way there is an earned run is if somebody hits someone in or gets a RBI. So you take the Earned runs and multiply them by nine. Suppose a pitcher had five earned runs and pitched 7 innings. 5 times 9 equals 45 divided by the 7 innings he pitched equals an ERA of 5.30. I hoped you enjoyed my answer and learned what you wanted to. The equation would be.....

Earned runs times 9 devided by innings pitched.

# of earned runs x (9 / # innings pitched)

ex. 3 earned runs in 6 innings would be

3 x (9 / 6) = an ERA of 4.5

ERA == (ER * 9) / (IP)

conventionally to two decimals.
