In standard English, it is "A university"
The explanation:
"Using a or an depends on the sound that begins the next word. So...
- a + singular noun beginning with a consonant: a boy; a car; a bike; a zoo; a dog
- an + singular noun beginning with a vowel: an elephant; an egg; an apple; an idiot; an orphan
- a + singular noun beginning with a consonant sound: a user (sounds like 'yoo-zer,' i.e. begins with a consonant 'y' sound, so 'a' is used); a university; a unicycle
Hope this helps!

It is no distortion as one of those who submitted a comment said. The [j] and the [w] phonemes (as in "university" or "war") are considered semi-vowels by some or semi-consonants by others, hence their particular status.

A University.
While normally "An" is used before a vowel, the word university is pronounced with a y-consonate sound at the beginning of the word (Yew-ni-vers-i-ty). You do not need the consonate N sound, so A is the proper article.

Why distort "university" to "Yew-ni-ver-sity" and refuse to use an? It sounds "U-ni-ver-city" to me so "an" is fair, is it not? Or is it another exception in a language where exception seems to be the rule "https://www.englishforums.com/English/PoemEnglishPronunciation/hxdcb/post.htm"?

it's a university.
I know we were taught that if a word begins with a vowel you need to use 'an' but there are always exceptions. Still, not all long vowels would make you use 'a'. angel starts with a long a but we still say an angel.
