Hey guys(and gals), I have a 98 camry 4 cylinder with a check engine light on. I went to autozone and got it read. P0401 EGR Flow is insufficient. Alright so I did some research and the most common resolve is that the EGR vacuum modulator is what needs to be replaced. I called up a local shop and they quoted me for $245 to replace it. However, for around $80 I should be able to just buy the part. If someone could point me in direction of where I can go to figure this out or how I can do it myself let me know. thanks.

You should take the EGR valve off first and inspect it, or at least check to make sure the EGR valve is moving by placing your finger under it and seeing if the diaphram moves.

While the vacuum modulator can go out. It's actually more likely after 9 years that the EGR valve is simply clogged with soot and you need to remove the EGR valve and clean it.

Why spend $80 when it could simply need a cleaning and only cost $5 in cleaning solution?

The EGR is located under the fuel injection assembly on the back side. On most camary's it has two vacumen hoses running to it on some only one. With a 1/4 inch ratchet , ext bar and swivel you should be able to get to it without taking the fuel injection system off.
