Difficult question for Americans to answer...it requires a recognition that someone might just be bigger, faster, stronger than they are....
The EU is not in any position to assume a super power status...as too many of its members have political and social difficulties. But the euro is fast becoming the world's leading currency...and the American dollar has consistently been nose diving. And currency is VERY important. In fact, just before the US invaded Iraq, oil was about to be traded in Euros rather than American $$ - huge problem for the US financially.
As for Canada, we'll be just fine, thank you very much. We have no aspirations of superpowerdom...and we are somewhat self sustaining. Keeping our noses clean has served us well...and will continue to do so...

I don't think Europe will make it.As things look now I'm very skeptical the enlarged Union will function properly.
Citizens don't feel in touch with Brussels politics and the movement against the EU is growing fast.By giving membership to Eastern European countries to soon in many people's opinion Western Europe is flooded by people from the former Communist nations and not everybody is happy about that. Then there's the political deficit. The European Parliament still has too little power compared to the other institutions while it's the only directly elected body.
When the EU tried to push a new constitution it was rejected massively in France and the Netherlands which lead other countries to postpone or just not hold a referendum.
The EU is too large and too bureaucratic to become a super power and as much as I hate to admit it or how it may not look that way from an American point of view, the EU will never go against America.Fact is the EU is an American idea and all that is established are all the things Americans wanted when they formed the idea in the late forties.
Think America should watch out more for China or maybe even Venezuela possibly in combination with other South American countries.
And Europe is NOT socialist, read the CIA factbook on that one

Dont be fooled by the comparisons of the Euro to the dollar. I have lived in Germany for the last three years and it is not all its cracked up to be. Our economy is fine and I still believe and now I can speak from experience that the US is still the best country in the world. We are not perfect but nobody is. If you think our gas prices are bad they pay the equivelent of almost 8 dollars a gallon. The euro is supposedly worth more than the dollar but it cost more to buy things here. The tax here is 19% which is outrageous. Also look at France who just elected a new president who is conservative because the economy in France sucks and they wanted change. America has nothing to worry about, socialist governed countries will never pass us economically. Germany has trouble exporting due to the price of the Euro which is the reason some countries in Europe have voted not to go to the Euro as well. Do some homework you will see its not better. It will not adversely effect the US economically. Im not familiar with Canada's economy so I dont know about them but I imagine the Euro wont hurt them either.

As you note in your question much of Europe is a socialist, which unfortunately for most of these nations has been devastating to there economies, noted in their huge deficits created by their welfare states. You may find it interesting to take the time to look at what their shorter work weeks have done for their GDP and unemployment rate. You will quickly see that although the euro ahead of the dollar other economic indicators paint a much different picture.
At the end of the day though it will be difficult to determine who will be ahead. But I say the the Nations that embrace the free market and consumer liberties, and limit the influence of destructive government policies and taxes, will be the economy that thrives. With that being said as long as we in the US can start having some personal accountability and stay away from a socialist mindset we will certainly come out on top. For instance I feel France understands what can be learned from us and this showed in their last election.

Not at all in anyway. USA have to fear China and India, those are the new super powers. As an European i can acknowledge: Europe is legging behind in every sense. Compare for example Boeing and the European Airbus. Airbus has been subsidized with millions of state grants and still Boeing is doing better - without state support. Europe only has a chance if it drops most of its socialist policies.

The Europeans do well because they work together. We as Americans should adopt that mindset. We are a great economic power, only at the expense of division. How many friends does the U.S. have in this hemisphere? Latin America? Canada and Mexico didn't support the invasion of Iraq. We blame and bash the French, but they turned out to be right.

What are you F*cking asleep???????
Look at the labels on virtually everyting you buy, what does it say? MADE IN CHINA!
The US and to a lesser degree Europe, are going to be irrelevent in 10 years, maybe five.
China has gotten "most Favored" trade status and a host of other perks and not lived up to a single condition of those perks.
Once you lose your manufacturing base, it is impossible to get it back.
The skills required to make the tooling to enable the production of goods, be it tube socks or F/A-22's, are handed down in an unbroken line from the start of the Industrial Revolution to the present.
The only people with these skills in America are well into their 50's and are working at Wal-Mart.
Better start learning to speak Cantonese America, we sold them the rope and now they're going to hang us with it.

Feel Canada will just fine, they are commodity based so in a recession they wold actually benefit, we are another story all together.
We need to find a way out of our deficit spending. We need to pay down the detb, we cannot count on other countries buying our treasury bonds.
Yes they are headed for superpower, but it will not be like people think, they will domininate the rest of the world, only ones that will be able to stand up against them is China and Russia combined.

A European ascendancy has been predicted for at least 30 years. I (an American) don't see Europe supplanting the US so much as being on par. Meanwhile, it's the broader shift to India and China, and maybe Brazil, that's interesting.

it would want to might want to be China. they have a international pastime and are not shy about stealing each little thing that they could get their hands on. they have the money and the inhabitants to do what they elect. maximum of all they do no longer have crazies telling them the position they could and can't drill for oil or mine for minerals as we do. they don't care about the surroundings in spite of what they say. The air in China is so polluted that if it were any eu or u . s . there might want to be no Olympics. They thieve or purchase their technologies and we provide it to them in hopes that they are going to provide us a more advantageous helpful deal in promoting issues right here. they're the transforming into superstar till some thing takes position over right here to awaken our organization and authorities leaders!
