D batteries, for the swing
Also the right size blankets for swaddling, so many out there are too big or small. The ones the hospital has are perfect usually.
For an older baby, my favorite item was the baby bjorn hard plastic bib. Also williams-sonoma has these great slotted spoons which for heating a single serving of veggies in water, work perfect.
Oh and the Dr. Karp Happiest Baby on the Block Book - also the Toddler one is good. I also like a book by a Dr. Perlmutter - How to Raise your Childs IQ by Kindergarten - has stuff in there from newborns to age 5.
Outifts and sleepers with snaps or zippers down the front. If a newborn is prone to blowouts, you dont want to be pulling that over their head. We called our first kid - captain blowout.
Also Halo Sleepsacks. They make others like this too, but they're also sometimes called blanket sleepers. Great for when you're done swaddling.

When I had both of my kids I used different stuff. One wanted a warm bottle, so the thing that was really useful was a bottle warmer for the car. Plug it into the ciggarette lighter, stick a bottle in it and whamo, in 2 minutes you have a bottle, warm for the ride.
A dishwasher safe container that holds nipples, rings, pacifiers, all the little stuff, a very handy thing.
Aquaphor cream, its expensive, but after your hands start to spllit and chap from hot water, and little butts can use it too. I totally love this stuff.
When I just recently went a baby shower, for a really close cousin, I got her the things that you really don't think about, and don't really need right away. This may sound weird, but I also got her a package of condoms, and a small thing of lube. 6 weeks goes by pretty fast, and I know soooo many people that got pregnant right after the Dr. gave the go ahead. I wish I had thought of that after my first!!!
Bouncy seat is a must have too!!

Definitely one of the items that I really appreciated receiving but wasn't registered for was a First Aid kit. I only had to use it one time when my son was a baby, but now that he's an active 4-year old, I use it and restock it all the time. I have a Red Cross Portable First Aid kit that comes in a really neatly organized, easy-to-carry storage bin and fits in a diaper bag or just in the trunk of my car.
I also got a lot of use out of a quick changer kit. It came with a changing pad, room for about 10 wipes and a couple of diapers. This was so easy to grab when I was just running a quick errand with the baby, and I didn't have to lug the huge diaper bag every time. Also, when we would go out on all-day trips to the zoo or shopping, I would take this quick change kit - along with the big diaper bag - so I could carry it and the baby into the bathroom or wherever he needed to be changed. It kept my hands free to wash my hands when I was done changing him.

Car seats--she's got to have one before she can take the baby home!
Other things I would have gone nuts without--bottle brushes (still use them now and my kids are way past that), mobiles, cabinet & door latches, baby gates, a good stroller, a washable drop cloth--absorbant on one side, plastic on the other for under the car seat (a real seat saver!)
New moms can also really use a good massage--and a baby sitter while they go pamper themselves for an hour or so!
A good diaper bag is a must as well. How about cloth diapers--even if she won't use them as diapers, they are perfect for burp rags, bibs, wiping faces, and so much more!

it sounds like you don't want to do the cliche of getting diapers, but after having 2 kids, it really is the most practical gift. If you want to be more original, you could get creative with the package. Like take them out of the package and arrange them in a new way, like maybe in the first letter of the baby's name. Or you could make a huge tower of diapers. People would wonder what the gift was while it's wrapped.

Couldn't live without items:
Boppy
Baby Bjorn + Exercise Ball (great combo to bounce on with baby in Bjorn for calming a crying baby)
Miracle Crib Sheet (must have 2- 1 for wash and 1 for crib)
Bouncy Chair
Exersaucer
Symphony in Motion Mobile
Video Monitor- (still using one with 3 1/2 year old)
Diaper Champ
Diapers&Wipes (might seem uncreative- but totally necessary and appreciated- get a bigger size so they have some to grow into)
Triple Paste Ointment (the BEST diaper rash cream out there-but expensive)

A car bottle warmer. You plug it into the outlet in your car, so that way you don't have to be frantic finding a place to make sure the baby has warm milk.
Stay away from those adorably little tiny wash clothes, they come in handy for nothing and they are very hard to fold.
A loved my diaper genie also, when you are changing 20 diapers a day, you don't want to worry about them smelling up the house.

Depending on how much money you are going to spend, some life savers with mine (TWINS!!) are:
a swing, love the one that you can change from swinging front to back to side to side!!
the bouncy chairs that have toys across them (kick and play), a tummy time mat (little mat with two crossing arch ways and hanging toys),
anything that plays music for more than twenty seconds,
burp cloths and bibs
lots of sleepers (easy to put on and keeps them warm)
try to get the bigger sizes (6-9 mos etc) because everyone at baby showers like to get all the cute little clothes like newborn and 0-3 months, and once they out grow that, you have to go get more because noone got me the bigger clothes, pain in thebuttt!!
and i absolutely LOVE having a mirror on the headrest in my car so i can see them in their rearfacing car seat. Mine are pooh bear but they have others.
Good luck!!

A great thing is a Bumbo baby seat. She won't be able to use it for a few months after the baby is born...but it is great. I purchased one for my daughter around the age of 3 months. She is 6 months now and still loves it. Go to www.BabyBungalow.com and check it out. Do research though on the net and try to find the cheapest and factor in the shipping cost. It's going to cost around 40 dollars total, but it's great. It can be used to sit baby in to feed, to sit baby in while doing dishes, sit baby in to just play with toys, etc. I love it!

Our favorite 2 items were an inexpensive bouncy seat ($20) that vibrates and has toys hanging over the top and our bottle warmer for the car ($20.) We didn't use either thing every single day, but very often, and when we needed them, they worked every time and saved the day!
