I currently have 256mb ram, can I add a 512mb chip to the 256mb?

The reason I ask was I was told I had to keep them the same size if I run 2.

It depends on the motherboard. I have an older computer running Windows XT with both 256MB and 512MB RAM chips installed and it works fine. In many newer motherboards, you must install RAM chips in matched pairs. In other words, it has to be two 256MB or two 512MB, etc. It can't be one 256MB and one 512MB.

in case you have the means then purchase 2 1GB RAM otherwise upload 2 512MB RAM. overall performance is purely approximately an identical. the only disadvantage in having 4 512MB RAM is theres no room for extra improve till you exchange all the modules to 1GB. in case you're a gamer 2GB RAM is extra advantageous than sufficient. extra valuable improve your video card quite.

I think you should add two 512 chips. I remember our IT person at the Des Moines Works telling me to keep them even. Which plant are you/were you affiliated with?
